ABSTRACT
La caries dental es un fenómeno que ha afectado a la población salvadoreña por mucho tiempo, y como tal ha sido manejada con diferentes procedimientos como la exodoncia, restauraciones operatorias y los bien llamados actualmente tratamientos preventivos, entre los cuales se pueden mencionar los agente fluorados. Por lo que se ve la necesidad de realizar un documento que contenga información completa y actualizada, de todos los elementos que intervienen en el proceso natural de avance de dicha enfermedad para así poder dar alternativas de manejo en sus diferentes estadíos de evolución. Considerando la caries dental como una enfermedad que resulta de un proceso dinámico de desmineralización y remineralización, en el cual se ven involucrados una serie de factores etiológicos que permiten el inicio y avance de la enfermedad hasta llegar a la destrucción de la estructura dentaria, si esta no es intervenida a tiempo. Es aquí donde los tratamientos preventivos surgen como alternativa, entre ellos los agentes fluorados, ejerciendo su efecto remineralizante sobre la estructura del diente, siempre y cuando la capa superficial de éste se encuentre intacta. Las investigaciones realizadas acerca de la efectividad de los agentes fluorados sobre las lesiones cariosas, han dado resultados muy satisfactorios y de ello se ha obtenido una valiosa información que demuestran valores muy altos de efectividad, cuando son aplicados en forma tópica sobre lesiones cariosas incipientes. Esta investigación documental está basada en gran medida, en las publicaciones efectuadas al respecto por el doctor Simón Katz, doctor Santiago Gómez Soler, artículos de la Asociación Dental Americana, etc.
Dental caries is a phenomenon that has affected the Salvadoran population for a long time, and as such it has been managed with different procedures such as tooth extraction, operative restorations and currently well-called preventive treatments, among which fluorinated agents can be mentioned. Considering dental caries as a disease that results from a dynamic process of demineralization and remineralization, in which a series of etiological factors are involved that allow the onset and progression of the disease until it reaches the destruction of the dental structure, if it is it is not intervened in time. It is here where preventive treatments emerge as an alternative, including fluorinated agents, exerting their remineralizing effect on the structure of the tooth, as long as the surface layer of the tooth is intact. The investigations carried out on the effectiveness of fluorinated agents on carious lesions have given very satisfactory results and from this, valuable information has been obtained that show very high values ââof effectiveness, when applied topically on incipient carious lesions. This documentary research is based to a large extent on the publications made in this regard by Dr. Simón Katz, Dr. Santiago Gómez Soler, articles from the American Dental Association, etc.
